FAQ's
What are the bags made from?
Our potato grow bags are crafted from a heavy-duty geotextile felt — the same tough, breathable material used in commercial landscaping and drainage systems. It’s UV-stable, extremely durable outdoors, and designed to hold shape season after season.
Unlike craft felt, this fabric is engineered for outdoor use, resists breakdown in the sun, and allows controlled moisture movement through the material. It’s also food-safe and won’t leach chemicals into your soil.
What soil should I fill the bags with?
A good quality vegetable or premium potting mix is ideal. Potatoes aren’t fussy, but they do respond well to soil with added organic matter. Mix in a slow-release or organic fertiliser when planting for best results.
Bag capacity:
- Large Bag: approx. 100 L (around 4 standard bags of potting mix)
- Medium Bag: approx. 50 L (around 2 bags of potting mix)
If you’re filling several bags, ordering a bulk load of potting mix from a landscape supplier is usually cheaper and reduces plastic waste.
Avoid using heavy garden soil, as it compacts, gets waterlogged, and puts too much strain on the handles when moving the bag.
Can I put my grow bags on concrete or a balcony?
Yes. They’re perfect for balconies, patios and paved areas. Water will drain gradually through the fabric, and most of it is absorbed by the soil. Run-off is minimal.
Do the bags have drainage holes?
They don’t need them. The geotextile fabric naturally provides excellent drainage — excess water slowly wicks through the material while keeping your soil contained. This prevents root rot and avoids wet, soggy soil.
How many seed potatoes should I plant in each bag?
- Large Bag: around 5 seed potato pieces
- Small Bag: around 3 pieces
If a potato has multiple eyes (sprouts), you can cut it into sections. Each piece just needs at least one viable eye to grow. Let cut pieces dry overnight before planting to reduce the chance of rot.
Can I grow other vegetables in these bags?
Absolutely! Once the flap is closed, the bags function like any other grow bag.
Can the bags be reused each year?
Yes — that’s what they’re designed for. The thick geotextile felt is built to last through multiple growing seasons.
If you’re switching from potatoes to another crop, simply refresh the soil with compost or fertiliser before replanting.
