Vegetables to Plant in Autumn
Autumn and winter are fantastic seasons for growing cool-weather vegetables in Australia. The mild temperatures and consistent rainfall create ideal conditions for many hearty crops to thrive. Whether you're sowing seeds for nutritious greens or root vegetables, there's nothing quite like harvesting your own fresh produce during the cooler months.
Our Autumn and Winter Heirloom Vegetable Seed Kit makes it easy to grow a variety of vegetables perfectly suited for the season.

Beetroot - Beetroot prefers loose, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Sow seeds directly in the garden, keeping the soil moist for steady growth. Thin seedlings to allow room for roots to develop.
Broccoli - Broccoli thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and full sun. Sow seeds directly or start indoors and transplant seedlings. Regular watering is key for healthy heads.
Brussels Sprouts - Brussels sprouts grow best in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil with full sun. Start seeds early in the season and transplant seedlings to give them time to mature before winter.
Cabbage - Cabbage prefers rich, well-drained soil and full sun. Sow seeds directly or start indoors and transplant. Keep soil consistently moist for compact, flavourful heads.
Carrot - Carrots thrive in loose, sandy soil with good drainage. Sow seeds directly in rows and thin seedlings to promote straight root growth. Avoid heavy watering once established.
Cauliflower - Cauliflower requires fertile, well-drained soil and full sun. Start seeds indoors and transplant seedlings. Maintain consistent moisture and protect from frost as heads develop.
Kale - Kale grows best in rich soil with full sun to partial shade. Sow seeds directly or transplant seedlings. It thrives in cooler weather and becomes sweeter after frost.
Lettuce - Lettuce prefers loose, fertile soil and partial to full sun. Sow seeds directly for a continuous harvest. Water regularly for crisp, tender leaves.
Onion - Onions grow well in well-drained soil with full sun. Sow seeds directly or transplant seedlings. Ensure consistent moisture for larger, flavourful bulbs.
Pea - Peas prefer well-drained soil and full sun. Sow seeds directly into the garden and provide support for climbing varieties. Regular harvesting encourages new growth.
Radish - Radishes thrive in loose, well-drained soil with full sun. Sow seeds directly in rows and thin seedlings as needed. Quick to mature, they’re perfect for successive planting.
Silverbeet - Silverbeet grows best in rich, well-drained soil with partial to full sun. Sow seeds directly and water regularly. It’s a hardy green that produces continuously.
Spinach - Spinach prefers fertile, moist soil and partial to full sun. Sow seeds directly and harvest leaves as needed. It thrives in the cooler months.
Turnip - Turnips grow well in loose, fertile soil with full sun. Sow seeds directly and thin seedlings for larger roots. Both the roots and greens are edible and delicious.

FAQ's
How long will these seeds last?
Seed germination rates decline over time.
For best results, plant within 2 years of purchase.
Some varieties last much longer, so older seeds can still be planted—just expect lower germination.
Each Survival Seed Kit is airtight and includes a moisture absorber to extend shelf life.
How should I store these seeds?
While it's what makes them grow in the garden, moisture, heat and sunlight are the main factors that reduce the lifespan of stored seeds.
Each of our kits are sealed and include moisture absorbers, as well as storage instructions.
To minimise loss in quality, store kits sealed in a dark, dry, cool location. A cupboard is normally sufficient short-term (1 – 2 years). For longer periods (2 – 5+ years), we recommend you store our kits in your fridge crisper.
Where are Survival Seeds located?
We’re based in Toowoomba, Queensland, where every product is carefully handmade and shipped directly from our home business.
What are heirloom seeds?
Heirloom seeds are traditional, non-hybrid seeds passed down through generations. These seeds are open-pollinated, meaning they naturally produce plants true to type, preserving the traits of the parent plant.
Heirlooms are celebrated for their unique flavours, vibrant colours, diverse shapes, and higher nutritional content compared to modern hybrids. They are also non-GMO, making them ideal for sustainable gardening.
A key benefit of heirloom seeds is their ability to be saved and replanted year after year, unlike many hybrid seeds. This makes them vital for ensuring the security of our global food supply. By growing and harvesting heirloom seeds, growers help preserve genetic diversity, protect agricultural heritage, and support a resilient food system for future generations.
Can I save seeds from my harvest to replant next season?
Yes, since our seeds are open-pollinated heirloom varieties, you can save seeds from your harvest to replant in future seasons, ensuring a self-sufficient and sustainable garden for generations.

The cool season kit was the first I bought and currently have thriving in my veggie garden! I couldn’t believe how successful each variety was. I got over 90% of my seeds to germinate and I couldn’t be happier with the results! Already harvested daikon radishes, my cauliflowers have formed a tiny little head. My beetroots are about the size of a golf ball and growing! My snowpeas are almost 1m tall! Have started harvesting kale aswell! Loved how successful this was I came back and bought the warm season seeds and kitchen herbs and I’m about to get the edible flowers and medicinal herbs! The details and instructions you get with the seeds was incredibly helpful and I love that this company is only based about 2hours away from me and I’m in Regional Qld.
Only thing I wish is that you could order individual seeds especially if it’s something you really like or want more of.
I’ve only just received this email (nearly half way through June), and it’s way too late to start most of these if you’re in a cool climate area. These seeds really ought to be available at the end of summer or beginning of autumn to be of use to most gardeners.
PS: Who/what is the ‘Diamond Authenticity/Transparency ? Does it exist as any sort of real/legal identity?
It is really disappointing that someone would take the time to leave a review like this when they've never purchased anything from us. These seeds are ALWAYS available for purchase. Diamond Authenticity means we don't hide any of our reviews, which is unfortunate, because I would like to hide this one.
Please delete your review Kim. It is invalid and harmful to our small business.
We ordered a pack of the Autumn and Winter seeds and the order was packed and posted instantly. Australia Post misplaced the order but eventually located it 2 weeks later. In the meantime, Stuart organised a replacement order for us. Long story short, we received our order and planted our seeds. We couldn't be happier.
Delivery on time. Good communication. Packaging great. I've only just started the seeds. I'll let you know how they go. So far, very satisfied.
Quick delivery with helpful planting guide with each pack of seeds
