How to Grow

| Fill your bag to about a third with good quality potting mix. | Get your potatoes ready. Organic supermarket potatoes work great — just leave them on a windowsill until they sprout. Avoid non-organic store-bought as they may be treated with sprout inhibitors. You can also buy seed potatoes from a nursery if you prefer. | Plant sprouting potatoes just beneath the soil surface, sprouts facing up. | Once plants reach about 10-12cm tall, add more soil until only the top few leaves are showing. Repeat each time they grow another 10-12cm until you reach the top of the bag. This is called hilling — it's how you get more potatoes forming along the buried stems. | Keep the bag in full sun and water regularly — aim for damp, not waterlogged. | Once the plant flowers, start checking the side flap — potatoes will be ready from around 60 days. Reach in and pull mature ones as they're ready, without digging up the plant or stopping it from growing. Keep harvesting as you go until the plant dies back naturally at 3-4 months, then tip the bag out for your final haul. Leave them another two weeks before storing to harden the skins so they keep well.

FAQs

What soil should I fill the bags with?

A good quality vegetable or premium potting mix is ideal. Potatoes aren’t fussy, but they grow best in soil with added organic matter, so mixing in a slow-release or organic fertiliser at planting is recommended.>*Large bag: approx. 95 L of soil (around 4 standard bags of potting mix)>*Medium bag: approx. 38 L of soil (around 2 standard bags of potting mix)>If you’re filling several bags, ordering bulk potting mix from a landscape supplier is often cheaper and reduces plastic waste. Avoid using heavy garden soil, as it compacts easily, becomes waterlogged, and puts unnecessary strain on the handles.

Can I put my grow bags on concrete or a balcony?

Yes. These bags are ideal for balconies, patios and concrete areas. Water drains gradually through the breathable fabric and is mostly absorbed by the soil, so runoff is minimal and easy to manage.

Do the bags have drainage holes?

They don’t need drainage holes. The geotextile fabric naturally allows excess water to wick through the material while keeping soil contained. This prevents soggy soil and helps reduce the risk of root rot.

How many seed potatoes should I plant in each bag?

Seed potatoes don’t produce just one potato each — a single planted piece typically grows into a plant that produces many potatoes at harvest.>For a large bag, plant around five seed potato pieces. For a medium bag, around three pieces works well. This spacing gives each plant enough room to grow a healthy crop underground.>If a seed potato has multiple eyes, it can be cut into sections, as long as each piece has at least one healthy eye. Allow cut pieces to dry overnight before planting to reduce the risk of rot.

Can I grow other vegetables in these bags?

Absolutely. Once the access flap is closed, the bags function like standard grow bags and can be used to grow a wide range of vegetables.

Can the bags be reused each year?

Yes. The thick geotextile felt is designed to last through multiple growing seasons. When switching crops, simply refresh the soil with compost or fertiliser before replanting.
